Active Release Techniques® (ART®)

Active Release Techniques® (ART) has become one of most sought after soft-tissue treatments in the world today. Dr Lowthian is a fully certified ART® practitioner and provides treatment in conjunction with his Chiropractic care.

When a muscle tightens up; whether through a repetitive motion, or after it has been injured- swelling occurs, the oxygen supply to the muscles and connective tissues is restricted (hypoxia). The lack of oxygen also causes scar tissue to form. Scar tissue can adhere to muscle fibres, and connective tissue preventing them from sliding back and forth properly, limiting the flexibility of a muscle or joint. And it can adhere to nerve bundles, leading to symptoms such as tingling, numbness or pins and needles.

Research has proven scar tissue to be weaker, less elastic, and prone to future re-injury and as much as 1000 times more pain sensitive than normal, healthy tissue. Chronic pain is the result, pain that could remain for years after the initial injury. To avoid the formation of adhesive scar tissue after an injury, healing must take place in the presence of a full range of movement.

An ART® treatment works the injured area through its full range of movement while specific contacts are applied to release the adhesion formation. It is a technique that involves very specific movements to fully engage the appropriate area.

At Kanata Centrum Chiropractic we provide a very high standard of care with Active Release Techniques®. If you have a soft tissue injury, your best bet for a complete resolution is to combine your chiropractic care with a combination of Active Release Techniques® and a program of rehabilitative exercises.
